Happy History
Happy Vacations began first as a travel agency in Saratoga, California, selling
general travel products, mainly to Hawaii. In 1969, Happi Tours (the original
name of the company) began its operations as a wholesale packaged vacation
operator focusing on the sale of individual, budget turnkey packages, which
included air travel, accommodation and ground transportation to Hawaii.
During the 1980s, the Company began to reposition itself as a custom itinerary
vacation package operator. To achieve this strategy Happy Vacations invested
heavily in automating its internal systems, developing a large and experienced
sales staff and investing in marketing and sales collateral.
Between 1989 and 1993, the Company added various vacation packages to 16
Caribbean islands, including Jamaica, St. Martin, St. Kitts, Antigua and Aruba.
In 1990, Happi Tours purchased a small Caribbean tour operator, gaining the use
of scheduled air contracts.
In 1993, Happi Tours moved its headquarters from Saratoga to Scotts Valley,
California, giving it access to a more stable labor force and larger,
expandable office space.
1995, the name of the company official was changed to Happy Vacations in order
to brand itself as a vacation company vs. the old-school “tour operator” model.
At this time, Happy Vacations began marketing itself toward luxury vacations to
Hawaii and the Caribbean.
In 1996, the company agreed to manage and market a small Caribbean tour operator
named Rockwell Tours, Inc. This venture allowed Happy Vacations to expand their
product and service to a greater part of the Caribbean region, increasing the
company’s representation of 5 islands to 22 Caribbean island nations.
In 1998, we launched our product services to offer the exotic islands of the
South Pacific. First we added Fiji, shortly followed by the Cook Islands and
then Tahiti. In 2005, we expanded the South Pacific product by adding Samoa and
Vanuatu. And in 2006, New Zealand will be available.
Happy Vacations recognized the value of providing a more complete “vacation
experience.” So, in 2001, we expanded our services to offer golf rounds with
confirmed tee-times for our vacation packages to Hawaii. And in 2003, we began
to offer tours and activities throughout our destinations, whether they are
booked before or during travel.
At the end of 2003, our growing company relocated its headquarters from Scotts
Valley, California to a larger, improved facility in Watsonville, California.
Today, Happy Vacations services more than 3,000 active agencies throughout the
U.S. with its 170 employees, which include 18 satellite sales offices
nationwide.
We continue to grow and improve our products and services. There are still many
places and things that we see on the horizon that we will soon add in order to
create more “happy vacations” for every generation.
